A buttonhole is both a functional and decorative stitch. In high-quality jackets and bespoke tailoring, buttonholes can be an important indicator of craftsmanship, precision and overall garment quality.

Buttonholes as a mark of tailoring quality

Bespoke tailoring, regarded as the zenith of the apparel industry, remains a valuable craft today. Buttonholes often serve as the signature of a master tailor, although the details that distinguish their quality are usually recognized only by industry experts.

For prestigious apparel brands, attention to buttonhole quality, appearance and craftsmanship represents a discreet yet significant area of competition.

The pinnacle of buttonhole craftsmanship is undoubtedly the hand-sewn buttonhole made with silk thread. Milanese buttonholes take this technique a step further by using a spiral stitching method. As machines cannot replicate them, they provide strong evidence that a jacket has been hand-sewn.

The characteristic herringbone pattern is created by locking each stitch with a single strand of silk thread. It not only indicates hand sewing but also emphasizes the clean, precise stitches and their sharp appearance.

From hand-sewn to machine-made buttonholes

Limited access to hand-sewn bespoke garments drove the development of mass production, while the craftsmanship of traditional tailors helped shape the standards for machine-made buttonholes.

The Reece, the world’s first eyelet buttonhole machine, set industry benchmarks until Dürkopp-Adler entered the market in 1935. The Dürkopp-Adler 580 series later introduced electronic components, raising the standards of buttonhole technology.

The latest Dürkopp-Adler 581 Multiflex offers custom blade designs for precise and symmetrical buttonholes tailored to individual customer requirements.

Sewing threads for high-quality buttonholes

Advances in machine tailoring have been accompanied by significant progress in synthetic sewing threads for next-generation buttonholes. Thread manufacturers’ investment in research and development to achieve greater symmetry reflects the same precision and dedication recognized by master tailors.

Although these developments have benefited the apparel industry, effective machine programming still requires the expertise of master tailors. It also requires an understanding of how different sewing thread combinations interact with different fabrics.

To achieve a hand-stitched appearance with a raised stitch effect using No. 30 thread, a large-eyed A3 looper can be used on the Dürkopp-Adler 581 Multiflex machine.
