Sewing threads for bed linen
Bed linen combines sleeping comfort, functionality and durability. From soft cotton sheets and pillowcases to satin duvet covers and blended fabrics, seams must withstand regular use and repeated washing while maintaining their strength, shape and appearance. The right sewing threads contribute to durable construction, smooth seams and lasting comfort.
AMANN offers high-quality sewing threads for bed linen manufacturing. Saba 120 is recommended as a universal sewing thread for duvet covers, pillowcases and other bed linen products. It provides a versatile solution for different seam constructions and fabric types. The appropriate sewing thread and sewing conditions depend on the material properties, seam requirements and intended use of the finished product.

AMANN sewing thread recommendation for bed linen
The production of bed linen requires sewing threads that provide reliable seam strength, consistent stitch formation and durable sewing performance. Since bed linen comes into direct contact with the skin and is washed regularly, seam comfort, appearance and resistance to repeated mechanical stress are particularly important.
For the application shown below, AMANN recommends Saba 120 as a universal sewing thread for bed linen. Saba Ticket 120 / Tex 24 is used as both needle and bobbin or looper thread for the two illustrated seam positions.
For closing and serging seams, the technical recommendation specifies a 401+504 safety seam, combining a double chainstitch with a 3-thread overlock stitch. This seam construction allows fabric layers to be joined and edges to be secured in one operation.
For closing seams using a 301 lockstitch, Saba Ticket 120 / Tex 24 is recommended as both needle and bobbin thread. This stitch type provides a suitable solution for joining fabric panels and producing neat, consistent seams.
Both illustrated applications specify a minimum needle size of Nm 65 / No. 9.
The choice of sewing thread should take into account the fabric type, material thickness, stitch type and sewing conditions. The corresponding technical recommendations are provided in the table below.

Requirements for sewing threads in bed linen manufacturing
Bed linen seams must withstand regular use, repeated washing and mechanical stress while maintaining the comfort and appearance of the finished product. Depending on the fabric, product construction and intended use, requirements may include:
- High seam strength and durability
- Reliable performance under repeated mechanical stress
- Resistance to regular washing and appropriate care processes
- Consistent stitch formation
- Reliable sewing performance at industrial production speeds
- Suitability for lightweight and medium-weight bedding fabrics
- Compatibility with cotton, satin and blended fabrics
- Soft and comfortable seams, particularly for products in direct contact with the skin
- Neat and consistent seam appearance
- Reliable performance in closing and safety seam applications
- Secure and consistent finishing of fabric edges
- Consistent seam quality throughout the manufacturing process
The right combination of sewing thread, thread size, stitch type, needle size and fabric helps achieve durable seams while preserving the comfort, appearance and functionality of bed linen.
Choosing the right sewing thread for bed linen
There is no single sewing thread size or seam construction suitable for every bed linen application. The appropriate solution depends on several factors, including:
- Type of product, such as duvet covers, pillowcases or bed sheets
- Fabric type and material composition
- Fabric weight, thickness and structure
- Number of fabric layers
- Expected mechanical stress during everyday use
- Washing frequency and care requirements
- Seam position and construction
- Closing or safety seam requirements
- Desired seam appearance and softness
- Machine type and sewing conditions
- Stitch type and stitch density
- Needle and looper or bobbin thread combination
- Thread size
- Needle size
A closing and serging seam using a 401+504 safety seam, for example, has different construction requirements from a closing seam produced with a 301 lockstitch. For both illustrated applications, Saba 120 is recommended as the needle and bobbin or looper thread.
