Sewing threads for upholstery

Upholstered furniture combines comfort, design and durability. From fabric sofas and armchairs to leather furniture, seams must withstand everyday use, abrasion and mechanical stress while maintaining a consistent and attractive appearance.

AMANN offers a wide range of sewing threads for upholstery applications. Rasant-Oxella is recommended for upholstered furniture, while Saba, Rasant, Serafil, Onyx and Serabraid provide additional options for closing and decorative seams. The appropriate sewing thread depends on the upholstery material, seam construction and desired appearance.

AMANN sewing thread recommendation for upholstered furniture

Upholstered furniture requires sewing threads that provide reliable seam strength, abrasion resistance and consistent sewing performance. Different seam positions and upholstery materials can require different thread sizes and characteristics, particularly when working with fabrics or leather.

For the application shown below, AMANN recommends Rasant-Oxella as the sewing thread for upholstered furniture. Rasant-Oxella Ticket 30 / Tex 105 is used for closing seams, while the heavier Ticket 15 / Tex 200 is specified for the second seam position. Both applications use a 301 lockstitch.

Depending on the upholstery material, seam construction and desired appearance, Saba, Rasant, Serafil and Onyx can also be considered for closing seams. For decorative seams, Saba, Rasant-Oxella, Serafil, Onyx and Serabraid offer additional options in suitable thread sizes.

Requirements for sewing threads in upholstery

Upholstery seams must withstand the demands of everyday use while contributing to the appearance and durability of upholstered furniture. Depending on the material, furniture construction and seam position, requirements may include:

  • High seam strength
  • High abrasion resistance
  • Reliable performance under repeated mechanical stress
  • Consistent stitch formation
  • Reliable sewing performance
  • Suitability for different fabric and leather thicknesses
  • Durability of closing and decorative seams
  • An attractive and consistent appearance for visible seams
  • Compatibility with different upholstery materials and seam constructions

The right combination of sewing thread, thread size, stitch type, needle size and upholstery material helps achieve durable, visually consistent seams.

Choosing the right sewing thread for upholstery

There is no single sewing thread or thread size suitable for every upholstery application. The appropriate solution depends on several factors, including:

  • Type of upholstered furniture
  • Upholstery material, such as fabric or leather
  • Material thickness and construction
  • Expected mechanical stress and abrasion
  • Seam position and construction
  • Closing or decorative seam requirements
  • Desired seam appearance
  • Stitch type and stitch density
  • Thread size
  • Needle size

A decorative seam on a leather sofa, for example, may require a different thread size and appearance from a functional closing seam in fabric upholstery. Sewing threads should therefore be selected according to the material, seam position and intended use of the furniture.
