Sewing threads for industrial filtration and filter textiles

Industrial filter textiles must perform reliably under demanding operating conditions. Depending on the filtration process, they may be exposed to particles, liquids, gases, chemicals, mechanical stress and elevated temperatures. The seams are an important part of the filter construction and require sewing threads that maintain their performance throughout the service life of the filter.

For industrial filtration applications, AMANN recommends PP-tech, a polypropylene continuous filament sewing thread developed specifically for the filter industry and characterised by high chemical resistance. Depending on the filtration process and operating conditions, D-tech and Zyex® can be used as alternatives.

Wet filtration and solid-liquid separation

Wet filtration and solid-liquid separation can expose textile filters and their seams to liquids and different chemical environments. The sewing thread therefore needs to provide reliable seam performance while offering suitable resistance to the substances involved in the filtration process.

For these applications, AMANN recommends PP-tech, a polypropylene continuous filament sewing thread with high chemical resistance. PP-tech is specifically designed for the filter industry and is suitable for wet filtration and solid-liquid separation.

Dedusting and dry filtration

In dedusting applications, textile filter elements are continuously exposed to particles, mechanical stress and process-specific environmental conditions. Reliable seams are essential for maintaining the integrity of the textile filter construction.

For filtration applications involving dedusting, AMANN offers D-tech, a Dolanit® polyacrylic cut staple spun special sewing thread with high resistance to bases and acids and permanent temperature resistance up to approximately 125°C.

Chemically demanding filtration

Some filtration processes place particularly high demands on the chemical and thermal resistance of the sewing thread. In these environments, the thread must continue to perform reliably despite exposure to aggressive media, mechanical wear and elevated temperatures.

For applications with extreme requirements for chemical resistance, AMANN offers Zyex®, a PEEK continuous filament sewing thread with excellent resistance to bases and acids, high mechanical durability and permanent temperature resistance up to approximately 250°C. Zyex® is suitable for filtration applications including solid-liquid separation.

Requirements for sewing threads in industrial filtration

The sewing thread is an important part of the overall filter construction. Depending on the filtration process, filter medium and operating conditions, requirements may include:

  • high chemical resistance
  • resistance to acids and bases
  • reliable seam strength
  • high mechanical durability
  • abrasion resistance
  • reliable sewing performance
  • temperature resistance where required
  • compatibility with the selected filter textile and filtration process

The right combination of sewing thread, raw material, thread size, seam construction and filter textile helps ensure reliable performance under demanding filtration conditions.

Recommended sewing thread: PP-tech

PP-tech is AMANN’s primary sewing thread recommendation for industrial filtration. It is made from polypropylene continuous filament and was developed specifically for the filter industry.

Its key characteristic is high chemical resistance, making it particularly suitable for filter applications such as wet filtration and solid-liquid separation.

PP-tech is available in different thread sizes. The appropriate size depends on the filter construction, textile material and processing requirements.

Alternative AMANN sewing threads

D-tech

D-tech is a Dolanit® polyacrylic cut staple spun special sewing thread developed for filtration applications. It offers high resistance to bases and acids and permanent temperature resistance up to approximately 125°C. Its main filtration application is dedusting.

Zyex®

Zyex® is a PEEK continuous filament special sewing thread for applications with extreme requirements for chemical resistance. It offers excellent resistance to bases and acids, high resistance to mechanical wear and permanent temperature resistance up to approximately 250°C. Its filtration applications include solid-liquid separation.

Choosing the right sewing thread for filter textiles

There is no single sewing thread suitable for every filtration process. The appropriate solution depends on several factors, including:

  • type of filtration process
  • wet or dry filtration
  • filter textile material
  • chemicals and media involved
  • exposure to acids or bases
  • operating temperature
  • mechanical and abrasion loads
  • seam construction
  • required thread size
  • expected service conditions

Ideally, the sewing thread should be selected to meet the performance requirements of the filter textile and the complete filtration system. AMANN specifically notes that industrial filtration can involve very different chemical resistance requirements depending on the process and filtrate.
