Sewing threads for curtains
Curtains combine functionality, design and durability. From lightweight, flowing curtains and decorative drapes to heavy blackout curtains and Roman blinds, seams must provide reliable strength and stability while maintaining a neat and consistent appearance. The right sewing threads help achieve durable finishes without compromising the drape and visual quality of the fabric.
AMANN offers a wide range of sewing threads for curtain manufacturing. Saba 120 is recommended as a universal sewing thread, while other thread sizes and products are available for different fabric weights and sewing requirements. Saba in heavier thread sizes is suitable for heavy decorative fabrics, whereas Saba 150 and Serafil Fine provide options for particularly fine materials. Sabatex complements the range for overlock and serging applications. The appropriate sewing thread depends on the fabric properties, seam construction and sewing conditions.
Curtain manufacturing – from lightweight drapes to blackout curtains
Curtain manufacturing – from lightweight drapes to blackout curtains
Curtain manufacturing requires sewing threads that provide reliable seam strength, consistent stitch formation and a neat seam appearance. Depending on the fabric weight, material structure and sewing conditions, different thread sizes and constructions may be required, particularly when processing lightweight decorative fabrics or heavier curtain materials.
For the application shown below, AMANN recommends Saba 120 as a universal sewing thread for curtains. For closing and topstitch seams, Saba Ticket 120 / Tex 24 is used as both needle and bobbin thread in combination with a 301 lockstitch.
For topstitch seams using a 514 4-thread overlock stitch, Saba Ticket 120 / Tex 24 is specified as the needle thread, while Sabatex Ticket 120 / Tex 24 is used as the looper thread. For serging seams with a 504 3-thread overlock stitch, the recommendation combines Saba Ticket 120 / Tex 24 as the needle thread with Sabatex Ticket 120 / Tex 18 as the looper thread.
Depending on the curtain fabric and the sewing conditions, AMANN offers further options:
- Saba in suitable heavier thread sizes for heavy decorative fabrics
- Saba 150 for particularly fine decorative fabrics
- Serafil Fine for fine fabrics requiring delicate and less visible seams
The choice of sewing thread should take into account the material properties, stitch type, stitch density and desired seam appearance. The corresponding thread sizes, stitch types and needle sizes for the illustrated applications are specified in the technical table below.

Requirements for sewing threads in curtain manufacturing
Curtain seams must withstand everyday handling and the mechanical stress associated with hanging, opening and closing curtains. At the same time, they should preserve the fabric’s drape, appearance and functionality. Depending on the material, curtain construction and seam position, requirements may include:
- Reliable seam strength and durability
- Resistance to repeated mechanical stress
- Consistent stitch formation
- Reliable sewing performance at industrial production speeds
- Suitability for lightweight, fine and heavy curtain fabrics
- Neat and unobtrusive seams, particularly for lightweight or transparent fabrics
- Compatibility with different woven and decorative materials
- Reliable performance in closing, topstitching and serging applications
- Secure and consistent finishing of fabric edges
- Minimal impact on the natural drape and appearance of the fabric
- Consistent seam quality across different fabric weights and constructions
The right combination of sewing thread, thread size, stitch type, needle size and curtain fabric helps achieve durable seams and clean finishes while preserving the intended appearance and drape of the finished product.
Choosing the right sewing thread for curtains
There is no single sewing thread or thread size suitable for every curtain application. The appropriate solution depends on several factors, including:
- Type of curtain, such as sheer curtains, decorative drapes, blackout curtains or Roman blinds
- Fabric type and material composition
- Fabric weight, thickness and structure
- Transparency and desired seam visibility
- Expected mechanical stress during everyday use
- Seam position and construction
- Closing, topstitching or serging requirements
- Desired seam appearance and fabric drape
- Machine type and sewing conditions
- Stitch type and stitch density
- Needle and looper or bobbin thread combination
- Thread size
- Needle size
For lightweight, transparent curtains, finer sewing threads such as Saba 150 or Serafil Fine can help achieve delicate and less visible seams. Heavy decorative fabrics may require Saba in a heavier thread size to provide sufficient seam strength. For standard curtain applications, Saba 120 offers a versatile solution, while Sabatex is used as the looper thread in the illustrated overlock and serging applications.
Sewing threads should therefore be selected according to the fabric properties, seam construction and manufacturing conditions to ensure reliable sewing performance, durable seams and a consistent appearance.
